Wine tasting notes

The acidity is mouthwatering, yet the telltale stone fruit spectrum of flavors announce that to deprive oneself of chicken tagine with apricots or couscous with nectarines and toasted almonds - as one’s dietary inclinations inform - is to ignore the furtive hope that the summer will bring with it an overflowing bowl of cherries, literally and/or figuratively. Farmed continuously from father to son by the Besson family for the past ninety-five years. From a cool spot up against the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Winery information

Birichino

Based in Santa Cruz, Birichino was founded in 2008 by friends Alex Krause and John Locke. Alex and John met whilst working at Randall Grahm's Bonny Doon Vineyard and share a passion for perfumed, elegant but slightly mischievous wines; in fact, Birichino is Italian for 'mischievous'! The Birichino style is very much in the vein of 'New Wave California'. The focus is on drinkability, fruit expression, elegance and lower alcohol levels. Oak is rarely seen, whole bunch is embraced, native yeasts are in and filtration is out. Alex and John source grapes from reputable growers, who farm very old vineyards in mostly maritime-influenced or higher altitude areas such as Monterey or Santa Cruz Mountains but they also work with some extremely old vineyards in Lodi. Their Cinsault from the Bechthold vineyard is made from the world's oldest Cinsault plants. These wines represent exceptionally good value, given their pedigree

Expert reviews

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2018) - 91 pts

Vivid ruby-red. Lively cherry and boysenberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of cola and candied flowers. Allspice and licorice notes emerge with air and carry onto the palate, which features gently sweet red/blue fruit flavors that show fine definition and spicy lift. Displays strong, fruity thrust on the gently tannic finish, which echoes the spicy note. Josh Raynolds

Wine Enthusiast (2018) - 91 pts

This bottling, mostly from 1922-planted vines, is a uniquely intellectual spin on Zinfandel, proving unlike most other takes on the grape and somewhat simple, yet constantly calling out for attention. Aromas of red plum, cranberry and light herbs lead into light strawberry, dried meat and more herb tones, as well as a hint of blood. These elements all grow more ethereal with time

Vinification notes

Native ferment, neutral barrel, unfiltered
