Wine tasting notes

The 2018 Semillon vintage had excellent growing conditions with a good set and even ripening, delivering healthy fruit – ideal for creating rich wines with concentration and structure. The Semillon Gris and Semillon Blanc ripened more evenly than previous vintages with little to no extreme weather conditions during the harvest period. We are incredibly excited about this vintage; the wine shows excellent structure without being overly phenolic and therefore more expressive in its youth than previous vintages.

Expert reviews

Vinous/Stephen Tanzer (2018) - 93 pts

The 2018 Sémillon comes from vines planted as far back as 1902, the fruit whole-bunch-pressed and fermented in a combination of French barriques, concrete eggs and clay amphorae. It has a defined bouquet of yellow flower (dandelion?), white peach and subtle lime aromas. The palate is well balanced with a dab of ginger on the entry and a waxy texture. Peach skin commingles with chamomile toward the finish. This is a classy Sémillon.

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2018) - 4.5 stars

Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2021 – “Glorious 2018 walks delicate line between classic orange peel, wax & dried herb flavours shining through subtle oaking & edged with the zesty acidity of truly venerable vines (oldest dating back to 1902). 4% muscat d’Alexandrie, all naturally fermented (like most of these wines). An infant, lots more to come.”

Tim Atkin (2018) - 95 pts

Tim Atkin South Africa Special Report 2020 – “Boekenhoutskloof’s Semillon is the only wine that Gottfried Mocke makes from a flat vineyard – and what a site it is, planted in 1902 on François Malherbe’s farm. Blended with a 40% contribution from much steeper La Colline, it’s subtly wooded, with lanolin, citrus and some stony sap, lovely balance and just a hint of extra perfume from a splash of Muscat d’Alexandrie. 2021-28”
