Wine tasting notes

The 2018 vintage was the third consecutive drought year and proved to be the most normal since our maiden Swartland vintage in 2015. This harvest yielded more consistent tonnages than previous years which was evident by the healthy, less stressed vines. Day temperatures were notably warmer and night temperatures colder than usual due to the dry conditions with notably less than half our average rainfall. Harvest commenced during the second week of February and looked very promising from the onset with little to no adverse weather conditions. These growing conditions produced very healthy Syrah fruit, resulting in less skin-to-pulp ratio producing lower alcohols wines with elegant and refined perfumed fruit and excellent technical analyses.

Expert reviews

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2018) - 4.5 stars

Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2021 – “Heady scents of plums & cherries mixed with fresh violets on 2018, showing vibrant colour while lively acidity & polished tannins build on the palate. Whiffs of pepper & coriander spice, juicy texture courtesy 40% wholebunch fruit. All old oak, no distraction from fruit purity here. Swartland fruit, like 2017 (5 stars, 95 pts).”

Tim Atkin (2018) - 97 pts

Tim Atkin South Africa Special Report 2020 –“Given that 80% of Boekenhoutskloof’s Syrah now hails from Porseleinberg (the remainder is from Goldmine), it’s no surprise that this is such an impressive wine. Fermented with 40% whole bunches, it’s subtle, scented and almost delicate, with filigree tannins, rose petal top notes, some clove and nutmeg spice and a hint of oak. ”
