Winery information

Finca Allende

Finca Allende is the brainchild of Miguel Ángel de Gregorio, one of Rioja's 'modernistas'. The winery is based in Briones, on the right bank of the Ebro river, in Rioja Alta. The soils in Briones are composed of red clay and gravel and the vineyards face north. Miguel's philosophy is that wine is made in the vineyard and he seeks to express the individual qualities of each site, rather than highlight barrel ageing. Indeed, when you visit him in Rioja, he often insists on tasting individual vineyard wines in situ, to fully understand their origin and style. The single vineyard wines Martires, Calvario and Aurus are the ultimate expressions of Miguel's hard work.

Finca Allende practices sustainable viticulture without the use of harmful pesticides or herbicides. Cultivation is done by hand or with the help of horses. Allende's commitment is also ethical and the winery supports various projects aimed at helping more disadvantaged groups. The flagship Allende Tinto is 100% Tempranillo, aged for 14 months in French oak barrels.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2018) - 95 pts

Like the Allende Blanco, I also had two vintages to taste from the top red, but this wine is released early, so the oldest vintage this time was the 2018 Mártires. The grapes ripened thoroughly in this late harvest, similar to 2016, but in 2018, picking started even a bit later, the 15th of October. The great thing is that the acidity is still great, and the wine displays bright freshness and very healthy acidity parameters. This single-vineyard white comes from a plot planted in 1970. The bunches were pressed in a vertical press and the juice let to settle for 48 hours, after which time the must was put to ferment with indigenous yeasts in new French barriques for 24 days. The élevage lasted for nine months, and for four of those, the wine was kept with lees that were stirred twice per week. It feels more youthful than the mellow 2019, still undeveloped with a faint reductive character that I like and find in some of my favorite whites from Burgundy, flintstone and toasted sesame seeds with a core of yellow flowers and fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity and a nice thread, textured and tasty. The finish is almost salty. 1,500 bottles were filled in July 2019.

Vinification notes

Soft pressing of the grapes in vertical presses. Static clarification of the fresh must with 48 Hours duration. Fermentation in a new French oak barrel for 24 days with one Temperature of 20º C. Eleven months in Bordeaux barrique barrels made of French oak, four of them with lees and bâtonnage twice a week ..
