Wine tasting notes

100% organically grown chardonnay from the Isolation Ridge vineyard. Lifted blossom florals and white stone fruit. Lovely mineraltiy. The palate has lovely generosity on the front palate, well integrated oak that leads into an elegant soft and focused palate. There is a complex textured component which plays beautifully with the acid to create a delightful and charming chardonnay. A wet spring provided good early vine growth followed by a significant rain event in January which resulted in lower TA and higher pH. Harvested in the last few days of February, fruit was in clean and ideal condition.

Expert reviews

JancisRobinson.com (2016) - 16.5 pts

Pale greenish straw. Creamy, very slightly sherbetty nose and then refreshing, nicely balanced fruit with real edge and crispness. This seems pretty good value. Nothing overdone. Really appetising and long.

James Halliday (2014) - 94 pts

Organically estate-grown. A sleek feline chardonnay that has that slight understatement of all the Frankland Estate self-grown wines. Here the fruit is in the tangy citrus arc, but so well poised that no one aroma or flavour takes hold. Developing with quiet confidence.

Jamie Goode (2014) - 93 pts

Certified organic, estate grown. Fresh and expressive with fine lemony fruit, some pear and white peach richness, and a touch of grapefruit pith. It’s a very linear style of Chardonnay with unobtrusive oak and a focus on the cool-climate fruit characters, with just a bit of nutty toasty warmth on the finish. Sophisticated and cellar-worthy

Wine Front (2015) - 92+ pts

Frankland Estate is of course far more associated with riesling than with chardonnay but this release does its best to arrest control of the perch. It was grown on 28-year-old vines, it was farmed organically, and it was fermented (and matured) in 500 litre puncheons. It’s a picture of elegance and restraint but without any subsequent drop off in either power or complexity. This is an impressive chardonnay. Grapefruit and citrus flavours strike clear blows, as do oatmeal, sweet cedar wood and barley. Everything presents as pure and buoyant. Thumbs up for this one.
