Wine tasting notes

Unlike many Rosso di Montalcino that often is composed of the inferior barrels for Brunello, this is a site-specific bottling treated every step along the way like Riccardo's Brunello offerings. The vineyard is situated in Castelnuovo dell'Abate on a steep hillside with Mastrojanni's Vigna Schiena d'Asino on one side and Poggio di Sotto on the other. This is a very serious Rosso di Montalcino that combines freshness and drinkability with intensity of fruit and an elegant finish. This wine outclasses many Brunello di Montalcino's with relative ease and remains a tremendous value. This wine perfectly encompasses the near perfection of the 2012 vintage. The vintage was very dry and then a perfectly timed rain at the end of August came to freshen things up while the temperatures turned a few degrees cooler and yet still dry for the duration of vintage. It is a vintage of balanced tannins and acidity with fruit a shade dialed back from 2010. Classic and great. Balsamic aromas of dark cherry, sweet spices and aromatic herbs on the knockout nose. Then big and rich in the mouth, with tactile flavors of sweet red cherry and blueberry. Finishes long and suave; this will gain in depth and smoothness with time in the cellar.
