Winery information

Miguel Torres

Founded in 1870, Familia Torres is widely regarded as one of the world’s most innovative wineries. They are also one of Spain’s leading producers of premium quality wines – a position which was recognised when they were presented with ‘The World’s Most Admired Wine Brand’ award.
Miguel A. Torres is widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading wine visionaries. After studying oenology and viticulture in Dijon and Montpellier he was responsible for pioneering a number of significant technological advances in the field of winemaking in both Spain and Chile. Today the company is run by his son, Miguel Torres Maczassek, the General Manager of Bodegas Torres, who succeeded his father in 2012.

Torres Spain
Famila Torres’ reputation for combining innovation, dynamism and a commitment to quality has put them, and Catalonia, firmly on the world map. Today they remain a wholly independent and family-owned company, which is now run by 5th generation of the family.
As part of the 4th generation, Miguel A. Torres has been described as “one of Spain’s most innovative and influential winemakers”. As well as being one of the first exponents of stainless-steel tanks and temperature controlled fermentation, he also pioneered the planting of non-Spanish grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, in his native Spain. During the past 30 years Familia Torres have also focused on re-discovering ancient Catalan grape varieties that existed before Phyloxera. Today close to 50 of these “forgotten” varieties have been rescued and about six of them show great enological potential. Indeed, two of them – Garro and Querol - are already used in the top single vineyard wine Grans Muralles.

Food matching

A lovely aperitif, it is also a perfect match for seafood, fresh or fried fish, and goes wonderfully with salads. Best served at 8–10ºC.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2009) - 90 to 93 pts

Wine Advocate #195 Jun 2011 - Jay Miller - The 2009 Celeste is 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero aged for 12 months in French and American oak. It offers up an already complex nose of cedar, exotic spices, incense, lavender, espresso, and blackberry. This is followed by a supple, spicy, ripe, layered wine that will evolve for another 3-4 years and drink well through 2021 if not longer.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2009) - 89 pts

Sep 12. By Josh Raynolds - Vivid ruby. Ripe dark berry aromas and flavors are brightened by notes of candied licorice and mocha. Pliant and gently tannic on a finish that leaves peppery spice and bitter chocolate notes in its wake. Give this wine a little air time. (2012) - 16 pts

Tasted Aug 2015 - It has a moderate bouquet based on spices such as liquorice and cinnamon, positive reduction and black cherry aromas underneath. Quite refined tannins and balanced fruit character. A well-made, classic wine, the archetype of Ribera Crianza. Lots of tobacco and cedar at the back palate. (FC)

Wine Spectator (2012) - 90 pts

Oct 2015 - A polished texture carries reserved but harmonious flavors of black cherry, licorice, smoke, tar and mineral in this rather austere red. Well-integrated tannins impart structure, giving this depth and focus. Drink now through 2022.

James Suckling (2012) - 92 pts

Aromas of dried fruit, leather and spice follow through to a full body with soft and silky tannins and a long and fresh finish. Drink now

Wine Enthusiast (2012) - 91 pts

Earthy berry, spice, leather and vanilla aromas are textbook for the region. This Crianza feels fresh but sturdy, with meaty tannins. Briar, cherry and medicinal plum and berry flavors finish with sweeping chocolate and brambly spice notes.

Natalie McLean (2011) - 90 pts

Juicy, dark and delicious! Big black fleshy fruit wrapped in a smoky blanket. Terrific for this price. The finish is saturated with dark fruit flavours and aromas that provoke the desire for another glass. A perfect pairing for The Good Wife. Polished tannins with a long finish.
