Wine tasting notes

The wine has a distinctive yellow apple and pineapple core, alongside notes of green melon and limes. The wine is bursting with fresh fruit flavours ending with zesty citrus flavours, and has a long mineral finish. A very clean and satisfying hand-picked Chenin Blanc that's a versatile wine for food pairing.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2016) - 89 pts

April 2017 - Neal Martin - The 2016 Chenin Blanc Original comes from vines planted on granite and sandstone soils, and is fermented and aged in stainless steel. It has a fresh red apple and quince jelly bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a slightly waxy entry, notes of nectarine and a hint of star fruit, a pleasant salinity with a crisp, dry, mouth-cleansing finish.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2016) - 90 pts

May 2017 - Vouvray-like scents of apple, honeysuckle and lanolin. Densely packed Chenin Blanc with a touch of sweetness easily handled by good acidity and a solid underlying spine. Finishes tactile, salty and dry, with a touch of phenolics contributing to the impression of grip. Lightly smoky throughout. This wine offers good weight and palate presence for its low alcohol. -- Stephen Tanzer

JancisRobinson.com (2012) - 16.5 pts

Tasted June 2013 - 100% Chenin Blanc. Floral, broad, honeyed nose. Very juicy and absolutely brilliant as a textbook example of the variety. Clean but not lacking in character.

Wine Spectator (2017) - 89 pts

Plump and friendly, with a mix of yellow apple, white ginger and chamomile notes backed by a juicy, unadorned finish. Drink now through 2019.

Wine Enthusiast (2016) - 88 pts

Clean and bright, this opens with light aromas of fresh green apple, underripe pear and melon rind. The lightweight palate is fresh and racy, with a friendly and enjoyable mouthwatering finish. Drink now–2018.

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2014) - 4 stars

Like bouncy 2013, unwooded 2014 cut above your everyday tipple. Sophisticated melange quince, naartjie, pear & green peaches; steely mineral persistence.

Tim Atkin (2017) - 90 pts

Since its first vintage in 2001, this good value unwooded Chenin has done a tremendous amount to promote the variety around the globe. Entirely unwooded, it’s a very pure expression of the grape, with fennel and stone fruit flavours and plenty of underlying acidity. 2019-23
