Winery information

Vergelegen

Nestled between the Helderberg & Hottentots Mountains in Stellenbosch, Vergelegen is one of South Africa's premiere wine producers. The estate has a storied history dating back to its establishment in 1700 by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel. Today Vergelegen is owned and operated by Anglo American PLC , one of the world's largest global mining groups who have nurtured and developed it into a world-class wine estate.Vergelegen, meaning "situated far away", is now coming into its own as a showpiece of South Africa's recent wine renaissance. Winemaker, Andre Van Rensburg, has won numerous awards for the Vergelegen wines including the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Trophy in 2001 and 2003. Voted New World Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast magazine in the USA in 2005, Vergelegen has also been nominated the 'Best South African Winery' by the readers of Wine Magazine for five successive years from 2004 to 2008. In the making of wine a simple philosophy is followed. There must be harmony between the old and the new. Simplicity is combined with rigorous selection and infinite attention to detail and craftsmanship in the holistic pursuit of wines that are an expression of terroir. Following two decades of vineyard development and viticulture refinements, the team have been able to identify the individual vineyards and varietals that best express this great estate.

Expert reviews

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2018) - 4.5 stars

Intensity of citrus fruit & savoury hint, with vein of fine acidity, all combine effectively but with restraint of expression in 2018 - should gain more eloquence with time. Wholebunch, ferment & maturation in oak, 30% new; 13.9% alcohol. - Tim James.

Vinification notes

Grapes were whole-bunch pressed with no skin contact. The juice, with some clarification, was racked into 50% new French oak barrels (Francois Frère, Dargaud & Jaegle) and 50% second-fill and third fill barrels for alcoholic fermentation. The spontaneous onset of fermentation was allowed for and after 3 days the barrels were inoculated with a pure culture yeast strain. Fermentation took approximately 15 days to complete; once the sugar was fermented, all 25 barrels were topped up. Only one-third of the barrels were allowed to complete malolactic fermentation to retain optimum acidity/freshness. The young wine was left on the gross lees for 9 months with regular batonage, then stabilized and bottled on 9 December 2011.
