Food Matching

Like most Australian Shirazes, this wine, which contains some aromatic Viognier, can take on an array of rich, robust, and intense flavours. The Viognier permits it to be matched with dishes that have a degree of subtlety as well. In their book The Simple Art of Marrying Food and Wine, Malcolm Gluck and Mark Hix recommend Bouillabaisse as a perfect match.

Wine tasting notes

Deep crimson with violet hues, the Yalumba Y Series Shiraz Viognier 2008 displays aromas of crushed mulberries, wild berry and rhubarb which are complemented by hints of sweet cinnamon and violets. This wine is medium bodied with layers of wild berries and violets, while the tannins are soft which give the wine a juicy sweetness and persistence. Alc :13.5%.

Winery Information

Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family owned winery founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, a British immigrant (he was a Master Brewer in England) and it is still owned by the Hill-Smith family today with their high reputation as an independent producer. Yalumba is an Aboriginal word for “all the land around”. The winery is situated in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, in a small town called Angaston - an hour north-east of Adelaide. The winery even has its own cooperage – the only one in Oz.. read more

Expert Reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2014)87 pts

This Syrah shows a deep garnet-purple color with char-grilled notes, blackberries, blueberries, pepper and Indian spices. There is also a touch of garrigue in the 2014 Shiraz Y Series, which has a medium to full body and good concentration. The wine is well-supported by ripe, round tannins and possesses a peppery finish.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2015)88 pts

Deep ruby. Smoke-tinged blue fruit and floral scents and flavors; a hint of cracked pepper adds spiciness. Juicy and energetic in style, showing a slight jamminess on the back half. Straightforward and supple in texture, finishing on a lingering blueberry note and with no obvious tannins.

Wine Spectator (2016)86 pts

The tangy berry and cherry flavors are straightforward and appealing, with black tea and spice accents.

Decanter (2015)85 pts

Primary berry fruit sweetness on the nose. Youthful ripe dark fruit, with soft, delicate scottish raspberries and loganberries adding weight on the mid-palate.

Vinification Notes

The grapes were fermented in static potters and rotary fermenters. Warm temperatures at the onset of fermentation and also 3-5 days post ferment maceration has helped extract soft fleshy tannins and build elegant structure.
