Like most Australian Shirazes, this wine, which contains some aromatic Viognier, can take on an array of rich, robust, and intense flavours. The Viognier permits it to be matched with dishes that have a degree of subtlety as well. In their book The Simple Art of Marrying Food and Wine, Malcolm Gluck and Mark Hix recommend Bouillabaisse as a perfect match.

Wine tasting notes

Deep crimson purple in colour, the 2010 Y Series Shiraz Viognier has aromas that are both wild and exotic. Blueberries, violets and cherry ripe notes from the Shiraz are elevated by the subtle influence of Viognier, which brings an alluring Turkish delight character. The well rounded palate is medium to full bodied and shows Turkish delight and cherry ripe flavours that are in harmony with the silky tannins. Alc : 14%.

Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. The deep garnet-purple 2014 The Y Series Shiraz Viognier has aromas of warm blackberries, black cherries, anise and spice box. With tar and earthy flavors in the mouth, the wine has a nice savory character to it, with rounded tannins on the lively palate. It also has great length.

Vibrant and fragrant, offering flavors of dried apricot, wild strawberry and cranberry on a compact frame, lingering on the finish, with an herbal note. Shiraz and Viognier.

Vinification Notes

The grapes were fermented in static potters and rotary fermenters. Warm temperatures at the onset of fermentation and also 3-5 days post ferment maceration has helped extract soft fleshy tannins and build elegant structure.
