Torrontes

White grape variety grown in Argentina, the name is used for different cultivars grown in Galicia, Spain. Confusingly, the name Torrentés is also used in the Canary Islands for the grape Terrantez which is from Madeira.

Three Torrentés varieties exist in Argentina:Torrontés Riojano, Torrontés Sanjuanino, and Torrontés Mendocino. Torrontés Riojano is Argentinas most planted white grape with 8,100 ha recorded in 2001, and is said to be the most aromatic of the three. Torrentés is also grown in Chile; however exact records of plantings are unknown.

It is now understood through recent DNA evidence that the Torrentés grape from Galicia in Spain also known as Albillo Mayor is definitely not directly related.
