Sparkling Wine

WINE DIRECT offers you a shimmering collection of Sparkling Wines from the Old World and the New and an effervescent range of words to describe them.  From Italy:   Frizzante, Spumante and Prosecco from Veneto, Franciacorte from Lombardy, Asti from Piedmont and Lambrusco from Emilia.  From France:  Pétillant, Brut, Crémant and Mousseux.  Germany gives us Sekt and spritzig;  Spain: Cava and Portugal: Espumante.  Producers to conjure with include – Bouvet  Ladubay on the Loire, and Dr. Loosen on the Mosel; Frescobaldi in Italy and last but by no means least: our local English producers, such as Court Garden, Chapel Down, Rathfinny and the inestimable Nyetimber.
The New World is not to be outdone.  Some super Sparklers are made in California and Chile, by Graham Beck in South Africa, Pelorus in New Zealand, Jansz In Tasmania and the fabulous Sparkling Shiraz from Mollydooker in South Australia.
Sparkling wine is mainly fermented in the barrel but today many are fermented in bottle, similar to Champagne, and therefore may carry the appellation ‘méthode traditionelle’. Sparkling wines come in many colours, from palest lemon to pale pink, deeper pink to red (like the Australian Sparkling Shiraz).
Squash some ripe peach, into a glass and pour over a chilled Prosecco –
Hey presto!  A delicious Bellini!  Salute!
