Wine tasting notes

A clean, crisp and fresh wine that retains plenty of varietal character. Lively and aromatic on the nose, with the classic freshly baked bread crust perfumes and ripe, juicy pear character on the youthful, crisp palate which make this such a popular variety. Finishes with a zesty twist of lime.

Yellow fruit, flowers and honey nose. Concentrated and rich on the palate, hints of pear and minerality

It’s fair to say that Venetian Pinot Grigio doesn’t carry the greatest reputation... known for producing wines that can be incredibly devoid of flavour where quantity is deemed more important than quality, Alpha Zeta nevertheless attempt to produce a Venetian Pinot Grigio in the form of this “P” Pinot Grigio that marries quality and quantity better than most. Set up by UK wine importer Liberty wines in 1999 and using the grapes from two large co-operative producers in Veneto, the Alpha Zeta project is headed up by New Zealand born winemaker Matt Thomson. Sourcing grapes from vineyards in the Alpone Valley (within the Soave zone of production), the Alpha Zeta team have been assisting producers in producing better and better quality grapes for more than a decade now. In terms of appearance this Alpha Zeta “P” Pinot Grigio is a pale lemon colour in the glass. A minimal alcohol content results in almost no visible alcoholic legs when this wine is swirled. Aromatically really quite inviting, this Alpha Zeta “P” Pinot Grigio offers aromas of green apple, a hint of citrus zest and subtle wild flower notes. A slightly higher altitude selection of vineyards than those located on the plains beneath Soave has clearly resulted in a slightly longer ripening period and better complexity as a result. Crisp and light on the palate, this 2012 Alpha Zeta “P” Pinot Grigio continues to impress with green apple, pear and a hint of lime combining well. A good level of acidity emphasises the lean body of this Pinot Grigio and persists to cleanse the palate on the finish.

Vinification Notes

The grapes were harvested once very ripe, then they were gently pressed and immediately cooled to preserve the aromas. Fermentation took place slowly at 18°C avoiding any skin contact. Ageing took place in stainless steel tanks.
