Chakana

Juan Pelizzatti was born with wine in his blood, he can trace his winemaking heritage back to the 14th century when his Italian ancestors made wine in Valtellina, and so he is carrying on this legacy. Chakana was founded on May 2nd 2002 in Agrelo in the Luján de Cuyo region of Mendoza. Juan chose the name because Chakana is what the indigenous people of the Andean highlands call the Southern Cross constellation and, unbeknown to him at the time, his winery was founded on the very day it becomes vertical in the night sky over the Andes, marking the beginning of a new farming cycle. In Agrelo, Finca Nuna situated at 960 metres above sea level, has 120 hectares under vine, 80 of which have organic and biodynamic certification. Malbec is mostly grown here, but there is also some Bonarda, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, planted on heterogeneous textured silty-loam, sandy-loam soils on calcareous gravels. There are two additional vineyards in the Uco Valley. Finca Ayni has 20 hectares of Malbec, 4 of Chardonnay and 2 of Pinot Noir, and Finca Los Cedros has 13 hectares devoted solely to Malbec. Both vineyards are managed organically and are in Paraje Altamira in the southern tail of the region at 1000 metres above sea level, on sandy loam soils with calcareous gravels. In time all of the Chakana vineyards will be converted to organic and biodynamic farming. Their philosophy is one of constant soil and terroir research, agroecological viticulture and minimal intervention in the winery. They are dedicated to producing authentic wines that express the identity and character of the soils of Mendoza, and make a superb range of terroir-orientated fruit-driven wines that are tremendous value for money.
