Conti Costanti

Conti Costanti is located in Montalcino in the Tuscan hills of the Val d'Orcia and has a rich history dating back to the 15th century. The Costanti's are an old Sienese family. Marco Antonio Costanti had a daily habit of rubbing his face with Montalcino wine in order to reassure his people that he was in good health, which had suffered during the siege of Siena in 1554, and he did not want it to be known that his complexion had become pale and emaciated. After the collapse of the Sienese Republic, the Costanti's remained in the area and prospered, obtaining vast properties through concession and acquisition from advantageous marriages, and winemaking flourished. At the beginning of the 18th century Crescenzio Costanti would frequently travel to France to find out about new oenological techniques. In the 1860's Count Tito Costanti, was amongst the first producers to call their Montalcino wines by the name “Brunello”, the local name for the Sangiovese grape variety. But until the 1960's the wine was really only known to producer's family and friends. However, when Count Emilio Costanti, took over the estate, the wine’s potential was maximised and the Costanti name began to be known throughout Italy and the rest of the world with almost instant success. Emilio had no issue and traced the sole descendant of the ancient Costanti family to Andrea Costanti, who has run the estate since 1983 when he inhered it from his uncle. Andrea had no background in wine at the time, but rose to the challenge and now Conti Costanti are regarded as one of the top Montalcino producers. 12 hectares are under vine grown at an altitude of between 310 and 400 metres above sea level, planted with Brunello [Sangiovese], on the prized galestro soils on which Sangiovese thrives, dating from the Cretacic era and rich in lithoid components. The age of the vines are between 6 and 25 years. Recently 3 hectares have been planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Brunello is aged in 30hl Slovenian oak casks, between 3 and 15 years old, and in 5hl barriques. The younger wines are aged in 3 year old 225 and 335 litre French Allier oak barriques, medium toast. Conti Costanti create vibrantly fruity and alluringly aromatic Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino wines with astonishing elegance and striking intensity.
