Cabernet Franc

Black grape variety that is somewhat eclipsed by the similarly named Cabernet Sauvignon, however DNA testing proved that this variety is in fact one of Cabernet Sauvignons parents along with Sauvignon Blanc.

Cabernet Franc does of course wildly vary from Cabernet Sauvignon. Franc berries have thinner skins, are lower in acid and ripen earlier than Sauvignon.

Cabernet Franc is extensively planted in France, notably in Bordeaux, the Loire Valley and South West France, where it is known as Bouchy.

Outside of France the variety is cultivated in Spain, Hungary, the Balkans, Romania, Italy, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

Style-wise this variety will produce a wide range of results, typically the wines will be lighter in colour than Cabernet Sauvignon, and light-medium bodied with prominent fruit and sometimes hints of herbaceous notes.
