Hand-harvested premium grapes from some of the oldest vines on the estate are used to produce this rich Chenin with a gently tropical nose of honeysuckle and pineapple with fresh green apple and subtle oak.

Kleine Zalze is a family owned winery situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands. Winemaking has taken place there on a small scale since 1695 but it was in 1996, when Kobus Basson and his family purchased the property, that the modern Kleine Zalze was born. The 2016 Vineyard Selection Chenin Blanc is fermented and aged for six months in 400-liter French barrels. It has a clean and fresh bouquet with honeysuckle and jasmine aromas that intensify in the glass. The palate has a fresh entry with a keen line of acidity, brisk and fresh with a pleasant salinity on the finish. This comes recommended.

Unirrigated Chenin vines averaging 30 years old produce the grapes for this wine. 24 hours of skin contact extract flavour and structure, and the juice was then pressed and racked into old oak for fermentation, followed by six months of maturation on the lees. Thanks to the thoughtful use of old oak, rather than new oak, the wine retains a fresh, mineral character with rich apricot flavours and a soft texture. It has great length which is enhanced by the high acidity.

Part of Kleine Zalze’s drive to “tighten things up a little”, this pear, citrus and apple fruity Chenin offers a lot of flavour for your money. Subtle, fresh and balanced with just a hint of scented oak. 2018-21

Vinification Notes

The grapes were handpicked early in the morning and immediately crushed into holding tanks. We have extended (24 hours) skin contact to extrat all the Chenin flavours to ensure good structure in the final wine. Only the free run juice was used and settled for 1 day before inoculation with selected yeast strains. The juice was racked into barrels for fermentation. No new barrels were used to ensure that unique characters of the specific terroirs were preserved in the wine. After fermentation the wine was aged on the primary lees for another 6 months before being racked out and prepared for bottling.
