Schloss Vollrads

The story of Schloss Vollrads began in 1211, when members of the Greiffenclau family sold wine to the St. Victor monastery in Mainz; they are one of the oldest wineries in Germany, making wine for over 800 years. They are located at Oestrich-Winkel in the heart of the Rheingau region of Germany. The original manor house was named after the Lords of Winkel; Vollradus is a given name, and the Greiffenclau's are heirs of the Lords of Winkel. Georg Phillip Greiffenclau von Vollrads built the present house in 1684, which has been improved on over the years by other members of the family. In 1975 Erwein Matuschka Greiffenclau took control of the heavily in debt estate, which he was not successful in reorganising, and in 1997 bankruptcy was declared. A heartbroken Erwein took a gun into his beloved vineyards and committed suicide; since then the estate has belonged to the Nassauische Sparkasse bank. A little over 80 hectares are under vine, dedicated exclusively to Riesling. The vineyards are meticulously managed with strict pruning and crop thinning ensuring low yields. The soils here are unique, with six different geological formations, mixing Taunus quartzite, argillaceous shale, calcareous loess, sand and slate. Schloss Vollrads is an Einzellage (a vineyard designation) in its own right, one of a few historic German vineyards which do not have to display a village name on their labels, which for Schloss Vollrads would be Winkel. Therefore the wines are simply labeled “Schloss Vollrads Riesling”, and in this way states the vineyard site, the producer and the grape variety. The quality description of Kabinett was established at Schloss Vollrads in 1716, when the particularly good wines of a vintage were stored in their “Cabinet”, and today their elegant and polished Kabinetts are their signature wines. They produce the full spectrum of German styles, with Rieslings to suite every taste, from sparkling Sekt, bone dry Trocken through to rich Auslese and, when the conditions are right, luscious Trockenbeerenauslese and ethereal Eiswein. Schloss Vollrads is regarded as one of Germany's greatest wineries, and from entry level to the the top wines of the estate, they all show the uncompromising quality of this historic producer – this is German Riesling at its best!
