Nestled in the picturesque region of Gladstone, New Zealand, Urlar winery is a tranquil, organic oasis of viniculture. The winery’s name, drawn from the Gaelic term meaning ‘the Earth’, is a clear indication of its meticulously cultivated vision centred on uncompromising respect for the Earth and its bounty.
Urlar’s roots can be traced back to the remarkable vision of Angus and Davina Thomson who left their family farm in Scotland in 2004, drawn by the allure of winemaking down under. They faithfully transplanted their passion for the land and their belief in organic farming to the rejuvenating soils of Gladstone.
At Urlar, the words ‘organic’ and ‘biodynamic’ are far from being mere buzz words, they’re a deep-rooted philosophy. The winery is committed to producing truly world-class, high-quality wines through sustainable and natural methods of vineyard management. Pesticides, herbicides and synthetic chemicals are done away with completely. Instead, native plants are utilised to attract beneficial insects, while cattle and sheep roam the estate to naturally fertilise the soil, fostering a thriving biodiversity.
The winery certainly impresses with its impressive lineup of varietals, mainly encompassing Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Riesling. Among these, the Pinot Noir stands out, captivating palates with its strong complexity, structured tannins, and trademark Gladstone silkiness.
Visitors to Urlar winery are embraced by its stunning vistas, the immaculate rows of vines complemented by the backdrop of undulating hills. The tastefully appointed tasting room welcomes wine connoisseurs and novices alike, to indulge in a bespoke tasting journey.
Urlar winery, in it's simplicity, purity and commitment to the land, indeed embodies what can be achieved when a deep reverence for the Earth is combined with dedicated craftsmanship effortlessly weaving a tale of harmonised land and liquid in each bottle.
