ALPHA ESTATE was established in 1997 by viticulturist Makis Mavridis, and chemist-oenologist Angelos Latridis who is Bordeaux trained and widely regarded as one of Europe's most talented winemakers. After years of experience in various locations, they chose cool climate Amyndeon, a sub-region of Macedonia in the north west of Greece for their venture as they recognised the slow ripening season of the area provided the optimal conditions for the balance of acidity and fruit in the grapes. They have 180 hectares of single vineyard blocks under vine, planted on a plateau at an altitude of between 620-710 metres above sea level, with a mixture of indigenous and international red and white grape varieties on sandy-clay and limestone soils. They farm with eco-friendly practices, and their world class wines are crafted in a state-of-the-art winery that was built using refined technology which causes no harm to the local ecosystem. Alpha Estate are known for their oak ageing and extended time on lees, and noted for their Xinomavro from ungrated vines. They chose the name Alpha Estate because Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, and therefore the first letter of their location in Amyndeon – it represents the “new beginning” and “birth” of a new era in the world of Geek wine. They are now one of the most respected estates in northwestern Greece, emphasising their philosophy of absolute respect for the ecosystem, the vine-grower and the wine lover.
