Di Costanzo

Di Costanzo is the independent project of Massimo Di Costanzo. He grew up in The Bay area of California, but spent his childhood summers in Florence and Positano with grandparents and family. It was therefore in Italy, where wine, food and conversion are inseparable, that he learnt the connections between culinary and vinicultural traditions. In 2002 Massimo graduated from University of California Davis with a diploma in viticulture and oenology and worked in Stellenbosch, Mendoza (Argentina) and Tuscany, where he learned how quality wines are made and honed his craft. After a few years Massimo returned to Napa to work for small esteemed wineries, and it was while working as a assistant winemaker at the cult Screaming Eagle winery that he began to formulate his own winemaking vision. This came to fruition in 2010 with the release of his first wine – a few cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. Di Costanzo is a Cabernet Sauvignon specialist and he only grows this variety. The 26 acre Farella Vineyard in the Napa Valley Coombsville AVA is the birthplace of Di Costanzo. This vineyard, which has been in production since the late 1970's is planted on red gravely loam that sits on a base of volcanic ash; it has the oldest known Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Coombsville. Massimo uses French oak to age his wines and bottles them without fining or filtration. These are pure wines with terrific longevity, and are truly outstanding. The wines are presented in bottles with beautifully designed eye-catching labels, featuring a school of multicoloured tuna fish swimming in a semicircle. This is a tribute to one of Massimo's grandfathers who was a fisherman off the Amalfi coast.
