The Gnarly Head story started with the old and gnarly head-trained vines of Zinfandel in the Lido, which are among the oldest in California. On a mission to make serious Zinfandel, the original Gnarly Head team journeyed to the Lodi where they found century-old vines and the ideal climate for growing exceptional grapes; warm summer days and cool night time breezes from the ocean, in addition to sandy, well-draining soil. They took it as a challenge to create the best and boldest Zinfandel they had ever made, and the result was the first in a long line of structured, authentic Zinfandels that made the Gnarly Head name famous.
In the cellar, winemaker Scott Jones seeks to let the vineyard express itself, gently pressing the grapes into fermentation tanks. After several days of fermentation, the wine is gently racked gently racked into a combination of American and French oak for malolactic fermentation and aging. The Gnarly Head team has since expanded the range to include many other wines, all sourced from some of the best vineyards in California. Bancroft`s selection includes an Unoaked Viognier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Despite the variety, all wines are marked by the signature Gnarly house style which is big, juicy and deliciously drinkable.
