Kleine Zalze

Kleine Zalze's rich history began in 1692 when a census shows that German-born Nicolas Cleef had settled on the farm known as De Groote Zalze since 1683. He married a Belgium Huguenot and planted 7,000 vines on the property, and in 1695 Simon van der Stel granted him the freehold of the 57 morgen estate he had cultivated for 12 years. De Groote Zalze passed through several hands over the centuries until Gilbeys Distillers & Vintners bought two portions of the estate in the late 1980's from members of the de Toit family and consolidated it into Kleine Zalze. The present owner Kobus Basson, a qualified attorney, acquired Kleine Zalze from Gilbey's in 1996, and also bought the rest of the land that was once known as Groote Zalze during the same year, and so the modern day Kleine Zalze was born. The Kleine Zalze estate is located 3 kilometres outside Stellenbosch, in the heart of the Cape Winelands. Basson scientifically mapped the estate’s soils, planting according to terroir characteristics. 120 hectares of vines are planted on a variety of slopes, aspects and soils, benefiting from the cooling Atlantic Ocean breezes 15 kilometres away. This cool climate area ripens the grapes slowly to optimum ripeness and yields fruit with delicate flavours. Additionally they use grapes from long term contractors to compliment their own estate grown fruit. They comply with the internationally recognised IPW scheme (Integrated Production of Wine), which certifies that the grapes and wine are produced according to environmentally sustainable production methods, and they are also accredited by WIETA (Wine & Agriculture Ethical Trade Association). Kleine Zalze produces several ranges of wines, the most important are: The Cellar Selection which offers accessible fruit-driven easy-drinking enjoyment; the Vineyard Selection is crafted from grapes from specially selected sites, making expressive and complex wines with cellaring potential, and the Family Reserve wines, which are are their flagship range, made from fruit from single vineyard sites, and only produced in exceptional years, therefore only limited quantities are available. A range of MCC sparkling wines are also produced. Kleine Zalze’s award winning wines are known for their distinctive South African character that reflect their climate and terroir.
