The two Polenta brothers Angelo and Palmina arrived in Argentina from Ancona in Italy in 1912, changed their surname to the Argentine Pulenta, and soon began making wine, building up a good business from their Peñaflor winery. In 1997 they sold the majority of this Peñaflor company. In the 1980's and 90's second generation Antonio Pulenta pioneered two vineyards in Mendoza: one in the Alto Agrelo region of Lujan de Cuyo, and the other in Los Arboles in the Uco Valley. Antonio's sons Eduardo and Hugo established the Pulenta Estate in 2002, with the intention of producing small quantities of exceptional wines from these two locations. Finca la Zulema, the Agerlo vineyard, has around 135 hectares planted on alluvial soils ranging from sandy loam to clayey, with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinto Gris, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Tannat. Here wines are produced with good phenolic concentration, fruity and floral, with elegant, silky tannins. The approx 402 hectare Don Antonio vineyards in the Uco Valley has alluvial, sandy and rocky soils, planted with Petit Verdot, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Chardonnay and Semillon. Here the wines have intense colours, with mineral properties and. balanced tannins. The vineyards are farmed sustainably and organically to produce high quality limited yields. Now fourth generation Eduardo and Diego Pulenta have joined the family business, and lead the company who produce a wide portfolio of wines with real class and distinction in a series of ranges, from the young and fresh La Flor, through Estate to the impressive Gran wines: the pinnacle of which is the splendid Gran Corte.
