Raats Family Wines
Raats Family Wines was founded in 2000, originally a partnership between brothers Bruwer and Jasper Raats and their father Jasper Raats Senior, focusing on just two grape varieties: the white Chenin Blanc and the red Cabernet Franc. Their mission was to establish these varieties as international benchmarks, and today they have certainly achieved their goal. They are regarded as a world-class leader of these wines, receiving sustained national and international accolades, and glowing write-ups from acclaimed wine critics on a regular basis. Viticulturist and winemaker cousin Gavin Brewer Slabbert joined the team in 2010, and he and Bruwer wrote themselves into the history books in 2017 when they received the the coveted 5-Star rating in the Platter guide for eight of their wines. This is an accomplishment that no other producer has achieved in one year since the guide’s inception in 1980 – and to top it off Raats also walked away with the title of Winery of the Year! They are based in the Stellenbosch area east of Cape Town, with their vineyards planted in the scenic Polkadraai Hills, a tiny ward where the unique soils of decomposed dolomite granite produce wines of great purity of fruit and balanced elegance. This boutique producer passionately handcraft an exceptional range of terroir-driven Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc wines which, for wines of this quality, are outstanding value. In Brewer Raats own words “We do it small, we do it fantastically and we do it so differently to anybody else. The end result is wine that is rare, unique, small and different to anyone else”.
