Seifried Estate

The estate was founded in 1973 by Austrian-born Hermann Seifried and his New Zealand wife Agnes, in the Moutere Valley near Nelson, in the north-east corner of the South island of New Zealand. The couple were pioneers, forging the South Island's commercial wine industry, planting 14 different varieties on 2 hectares of land, hand grafting phylloxera resistant rootstock onto vitis vinifera scion wood, seeing what European grapes would flourish in a climate and terroir as yet untested. But Nelson has the perfect climate to grow premium grapes. Known for its continuous exposure to sunlight, it is often referred to as the “sunshine capital of New Zealand. Seifried's first vintage was in 1976, and from this humble beginning, Seifried have grown to be recognised as producing some of the very best wines Nelson has to offer. In 2104 Agnes and Hermann were recognised for their contribution to the New Zealand grape and wine industry by being introduced as Fellows of New Zealand Winegrowers. This is one of the country's greatest wine industry acknowledgments - the very first time in history that both a husband and wife team have been recognised, and a woman has been honoured. Seifried remains a family business with the couple's daughters Heidi and Anna, and son Chris now leading the team. They are one of the country's most sustainable family-owned wineries, they were the first Nelson winery to achieve Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand accreditation. The third generation of Seifrieds is waiting in the wings, ensuring the legacy of the South Island's oldest family winery. Today Seifried farm over 250 hectares over nine estate vineyards and grow a range of varietals, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Syrah, and some unusual varieties for New Zealand, which reflect Hermann's Austrian heritage: Grüner Veltliner, Würzer and Zweigelt for which they have gained a reputation. Each vineyard has its own special microclimate and is planted accordingly with the variety that will best express the site. Seifried combine traditional and modern methods and technologies to craft a range of fabulously expressive wines with a glorious purity of fruit and tremendous aromatics. Their Sweet Agnes Riesling is sensational, and New Zealand's most awarded dessert wine.
