Gran Canaria

Nestled in the Atlantic Ocean, off the northwest coast of Africa, is the stunning Spanish island, Gran Canaria of the Canary Islands. A jewel of verdant vineyards and plunging cliffs, Gran Canaria is a paradise for wine connoisseurs. Much like the island itself, Gran Canaria wine is an exotic, sun-soaked delight that draws wine lovers from all around the globe year after year.

Gran Canaria's wine production dates back to the 15th century with Spanish colonisers first starting cultivation. Thanks to the island's unique volcanic soil and mild climate, the vines in Gran Canaria thrive, producing rich, intense character in the grapes. Therefore, the island's wines are a bespoke blend of regional specificity and intercontinental influences.

The wines of Gran Canaria are powerful, aromatic and full-bodied with a wonderful volcanic minerality. The infuriatingly complex and diverse microclimates of the island foster a range of wine styles, from crisp and refreshing whites to potent, full-bodied reds. There's also a small production of dessert wines, notable for their honeyed richness and lingering finish.

Gran Canaria is particularly recognised for its white wines, made primarily from the local Malvasia and Listán Blanco grape varieties. These are typically light-bodied and aromatic, with notes of citrus, tropical fruits and hints of floral aromas. However, the red wines, predominantly made from Listán Negro and Tintilla grapes, are certainly not to be overlooked. Characterised by their velvety texture, they present a palate full of dark fruit flavours, backed by an enticing spicy edge.

The island’s wine-growing regions, designated as Denominaciones de Origen, are recognised for their diverse topography, which directly impacts the personality of the wines produced there. Some of the most famous include Agaete, Bandama, Monte Lentiscal, and San Mateo.

While tasting Gran Canaria wine, the true charm lies in experiencing the unforeseen: These lesser-known yet highly distinctive wines bestow intriguing and delightful surprises on the palate, echoing the alluring mystique of the island itself with every sip. The tradition, the geography, the inclusion of native grape varieties, all contribute to creating a seductive glass of Gran Canaria wine.
