De Martino

De Martino was founded in 1934 by Italian immigrant Pietro De Martino, who moved from his native Abruzzo to Chile with the dream of making stylish wines. He found his perfect spot in the alluvial soils and Mediterranean climate of Isla de Maipo, close to the country's capital, Santiago. The business remains family owned, run today by 3rd generation Marco Antonio, and 4th generation Sebastián De Martino. De Martino are innovators, labelling and exporting Chile's first Carmenere in 1996. They pioneered working with century-old vines grown in the Itata Valley, incorporating old winemaking techniques which set a precedent for the Chilean wine industry. They have over 300 hectares under vine in various locations covering 350 different vineyard sites, which they farm organically. In Maipo, where the Mediterranean climate is moderated by the influence of the Pacific Ocean, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Semillon are grown on alluvial terraces with abundant amounts of gravel. In Choapa where the climate is Continental with a moderating influence from the Andes Mountains, Syrah is grown on colluvial soils. Cool coastal Limarí has Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on calcareous clay. Casablanca, a similar area, has Sauvignon Blanc on decomposed granite with some clay. In the Malleco Valley, also cool and coastal, Chardonnay is grown on clay soils. The old dry-farmed vineyards of coastal Itata, strongly influenced by the Pacific Ocean, has Muscat, Corinto, Cinsault, Pais, and a rare variety called San Francisco, on granite soils with some quartz. The temperate Mediterranean climate of Cachapoal has Malbec and Carmenere on decomposed granite with some sand. In Maule, another temperate Mediterranean climate, Malbec, Carmenere, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown on decomposed granite with some clay. This variety allows for a huge portfolio of origin-reflective wines to be produced, and this trailblazing winery of Chile is deservedly well-awarded.
