Wine tasting notes

A blend of fruit from La Morra and Castiglione communes, this is regularly one of the very best blended Barolos around, surpassing many single Crus for quality. Long, grippy but smooth and sweet. Gorgeous, ripe spiced fruit flavours, classy and complex but not too slick or polished – it’s a very real honest wine with great character and sophistication, wonderful flavours of crushed hedgerow berry, blackthorn, Alpine strawberry, with hints of blueberry, clove and oak spice. Pure, refined, but with an edge and complexity that really sets it apart.

Winery Information

Elio Altare

Although Elio Altare is best known for the superb Barolos he crafts from the Arborina and Brunate vineyards, his entire range is among the most consistently brilliant in Italy. Elio Altare is universally acknowledged to be one of the world's greatest winemakers. Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2011)93 pts

June 2015 - The 2011 Barolo shows elegance and poise with a meaningful feeling of purity and focus. Elio and daughter Silvia Altare added some additional fruit from the Liste cru for the first time to make this base Barolo. It sees no filtration or clarification. Pretty berry notes with licorice and toasted almond fill the palate. Wild berries and pressed cherry give the wine vertical lift and energy.

Sept '14 - Altare's 2011 Barolo is pretty, silky and beautifully layered in the glass. Rose petals, mint, small red berries and cinnamon are all laced together in a drop-dead gorgeous, expressive Barolo loaded with class and elegance. This is pure finesse.-- Antonio Galloni (2011)17+ pts

Tasted June 2015 - Not tasted blind. Youthful crimson. Leafy, cool raspberry nose with hints of violets. Pure, linear and yet sweet raspberry palate with surprisingly muscular tannins for someone who macerates as little as possible. Long and as structured as a Serralunga. (WS)

Sept 15 - Pure and focused, revealing floral, strawberry, cherry and spice aromas and flavors, matched to a solid structure. Long and balanced, echoing the fruit and spice accents on the aftertaste. Best from 2018 through 2033

This is really fantastic. Better than 2010. Full and super silky with complex berry, lemon and cedar aromas and flavors. Gorgeous finish. Amazing vineyards go into this. From Arborina. Drink or hold
