Wine tasting notes

This wine was grown on the Barton Vineyard, Huangarua Road, Martinborough from vines 21 years old. A combination of deep alluvial gravels which the Martinborough Terraces are renowned for and a blend of many clones grown in a very sheltered spot always rewards us with a classic example of New World Pinot Noir. It was open topped fermented using indigenous yeasts in traditional wooded cuvees, hand plunged every 12 hours, with a total vat time of 25 days. After pressing it was matured in 30% new French oak barriques for 12 months. It was fined using a minimum of egg whites to protect the flavours and aid brightness in the glass without filtering, promoting soft mouth feel and texture. It has a unique site derived complexity combined with black cherry/plum fruit flavours. It will continue to develop for up to 10 years and will always be a wonderful counterpart to any game food.

Nestled amongst the undulating hills of Martinborough, in the gaze of the Aorangi Ranges, Larry McKenna, or Larry ‘McPinot’ as he is affectionately known, quietly crafts some of New Zealand’s most impressive wines. Pinot Noir is the grape he is most famous for, and his Insight Series of single vineyard expressions speak volumes for the unique Martinborough terroir. Not wishing to be in any way pigeonholed, he also produces world class Chardonnay and Pinot Gris!

The 2011 Te Rehua Pinot Noir is another town-based, single vineyard wine made from a mix of all clones available in New Zealand in the early 1990s when it was planted. It is pale to medium-deep ruby in color and is a little closed though it reveals earthy, delicate red fruits along with some lavender nuances. On the rather delicate, medium-bodied palate, there is just enough fruit poking through a frame of low-level, grainy tannins to carry it through a long finish. Drink it 2014 to 2019+.

This is more cryptic, opening eventually to reveal violets with damp, earthy notes and plenty of fruit in the darker end of the cherry/plum spectrum. Some hints of meat and dark slate-like mineral notes. The palate has impressive tension as the acidity and tannins hold crisp dark cherry fruit flavors in line, finishing with graphite, spices and a hint of pepper. Needs time. Drink in 2018.

Fruit comes from Barton Vineyard in Martinborough which was planted over 20 years ago, or so. Soils are typical M-brough gravelly dirt, and the vineyard is multi-clonal. Spicy, almost gamey aromas, red fruit, cherry elixir, wood spice. Very elegant, light airy feel to the wine, fine fine tannins, touch of twiggy spice through the finish, and washy through the back palate too. Such a pleasure to drink – easy going but fine, very fine. Fine. Appreciate the slim dusty tannins, chalky phenolic pucker too. Sits in the glass with quiet confidence. Transparent and character filled. Great wine.

Dense and appealing Pinot Noir with red berry/raspberry, plum, dried herb and mixed spice flavours providing good complexity. The wine has good weight and mouth feel with an almost chewy texture. Clearly very youthful with plenty of potential.

Just across the road from Ata Rangi, Martinborough’s finest estate, Te Rehua is the warmest and richest of Escarpment’s vineyards. Larry McKenna skilfully offsets its black and red berry and cherry fruits intensity and drive with the dried herb and lifted exotic spice complexity of whole bunch fermentation. Structure is wonderfully textured and firm, and at the same time silky and fine. A pinot noir of great energy and endurance, carrying with wonderful line and grace. It has a twenty year future before it.

Larry McKenna is a master of New Zealand pinot noir. At Escarpment, in Martinborough, he has fashioned an excellent range of 2011 wines that need only bottle age to complete them. The delicate, fine "standard" wine and the concentrated Kupe flagship are each superb in their own ways, but at the moment Te Rehua is my pick. It's fragrant with musky florals and herbs, spice, red plum and dusty, cedary oak aromas. A finely textured palate offers intense, complex flavours and savoury tannic structure as building blocks for the future.

A mixture of many clones from vines over 21 y.o. from the ‘Barton' vineyard on Huangarua Road, fermented with 40% whole bunch to 13.2% alc., the wine spending 19 days in vat, and aged 12 months in 30% new French oak barrels. Full, even ruby-red colour with good depth and youthful purple hues. The bouquet is very full, solid and voluminous, the aromas seamlessly integrated and stylishly restrained in expression. Black berry and dark plum fruits show with violet florals, hints of liquorice, herbs and minerals, and Asian spice elements. Medium-full bodied, beautifully harmonious flavours of black fruits, florals, herbs and exotic spices build in depth and richness. The extraction is significant, but the tannins are very refined, and discreet acidity lifts the aromatic profile, adding excellent poise and tension. An understated and elegant power drives the palate to a very long, delicately sumptuous and perfumed finish. This is a restrained, brooding Pinot Noir with seamlessness, finesse and a harmony that makes it quite complete.

Miscellaneous (2011)95 stars - "Semi translucent dark red colour with light crimson red hue. The nose offers up perfumed scents of ripe dark cherries, plums and a touch of dark raspberry followed by some gamey cedar and spice. Mouthfilling flavours of ripe black cherries and dark plum flood the palate with some underlying toasty cedar, dried meat characters and spice. Long powerful finish with velvet smooth tannins. Long ripe black cherry, dark plum, toasty cedar and spice aftertaste."
