Areni Noir

Areni Noir

The Areni Noir grape is an indigenous variety found primarily in the sun-kissed lands of Armenia. Cherished as one of the oldest grape types in the world, this cultivar has a rich and fascinating history, with findings suggesting it was cultivated since the Copper Age. It's even discovered in the world's oldest known winery, dating back more than 6000 years in Areni, Armenia, which the grape is named after.

Featuring a thin skin and a voracious resistance to disease, Areni Noir demonstrates a prodigious capacity for thriving in high altitudes and rocky soils, typical landscapes of its ancestral home. It is classically a late-ripening grape, allowing it to benefit from a long growing season to develop complex flavours while retaining its vibrant acidity.

Wines produced from Areni Noir grapes showcase an enchanting ruby hue, exhibiting its clear, bright quality. On your palate, expect lush red fruit characteristics of raspberry and sour cherry, complemented by a hint of spicy, peppery notes, and frequently, an undercurrent of earthy flavours. The aromas typically reveal an elegant floral bouquet, whilst the body is often medium, offering a smooth texture.

Areni Noir wines are generally matured in Armenian oak, which imbues them with a distinct character that sets them apart in the vast wine universe. This additional layer of complexity is a significant charming factor of this varietal.

Similar in profile to Pinot noir, Areni Noir yet retains a unique charm, displaying the constitutive power of its historical terroir. Increasingly finding recognition in the global wine scene, Areni Noir gives a delightful insight into the rich viticultural heritage of Armenia and serves as a symbol of the country's wine resurgence. From its history-laden origin to its appealing taste profile, the Areni Noir grape surely is an exciting epicurean exploration.
