Bobal is a grape varietal of Spanish origin, predominantly grown in the Uva de Vino region of Valencia. The name "Bobal" is derived from the Latin 'bovale', referring to the bullhead shape of the grape clusters. Accounting for around 90% of all vines in the region, it ranks as Spain's third most cultivated grape.
Characterised by its thick skin, the Bobal grape contributes to deeply pigmented, robust wines that pack a punch in terms of both tannin and acidity. The grape's high anthocyanin count is responsible for the profound colour profile of the wines it produces. Its hardy nature plays to its advantage, enabling it to endure temperature fluctuations and resist diseases.
Bobal wines exhibit rich, complex flavours, often displaying notes of dark cherries, ripe plums, licorice, and dried Mediterranean herbs. The more sophisticated renditions, typically aged in oak, often reveal hints of chocolate, tobacco, and spice. Whilst conventionally used in blending, the grape's value is increasingly being recognised in the crafting of single-varietal wines.
Historically, the Bobal grape was largely utilised to produce bulk wines. However, over the past few decades, winemakers have been harnessing its potential to develop high-quality, expressive wines that reflect the distinct terroir of the region. These contemporary creations, with their distinctive characteristics, are rapidly gaining popularity on an international level.
The indigenous Bobal grape is not only significant in the wine world for its contribution to flavourful, full-bodied wines, but also for being a figurehead of sustainable viticulture. The grape's low susceptibility to common pests and diseases makes it an ideal choice for organic and minimal intervention vineyard practices. Thus, the Bobal grape holds the promise of attaining more prevalence in the global wine scene, both for its defining tasting notes and environmental resilience.
