The Cesanese grape is a distinctive variety native to Italy, more specifically to the Lazio region surrounding Rome. Its existence traces back centuries, with the first written records dating back to the 18th century. Known for its deep ruby hue and alluring aroma, the Cesanese grape is the source of an enticing red wine popularly recognised as Cesanese d’Affile.

This delectable grape yields a wine that’s characterised as medium to light-bodied, with a tread of soft tannins. In its home region, the Cesanese wine is frequently paired with traditional Italian dishes, including pastas with hearty meat sauces, game meat and mature cheeses, allowing the dynamic flavours to be appreciated to their fullest extent.

Despite its noteworthy qualities, Cesanese grape remains enigmatic and largely under the radar, mainly due to its minimal presence outside of Lazio. But the landscape is slowly changing with increasing international interest in less famous Italian varieties and rising fervour for traditionally made wines. More recently, a handful of younger generation wine producers have been spotlighted for their nimble artistry with Cesanese grape, ensuring this hidden gem in the world of viticulture is poised for greater recognition.
