The Friulano grape is a white Italian wine grape variety grown predominantly in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region located in the northeast corner of Italy. This is a region recognised worldwide for its high-quality white wines. The grape was previously known by the name Tocai Friulano; however, following a court ruling in 2007, this name had to be omitted to avoid confusion with Hungarian Tokaji dessert wine.

Whilst the origins of the Friulano grape can be traced back to France, specifically the Bordeaux region, it has established its rightful home in Italy where it thrives due to the ideal climate and terroir. It is typically harvested in early-to-mid September and often vinified on its own, but occasionally may be blended with other indigenous or international varietals.

The Friulano grape is characterised by fragrant aromas of almonds, peaches, and floral undertones, combined with a light to medium body and high acidity, making it refreshing and quite a versatile wine when it comes to food pairings. It pairs harmoniously with traditional Friulian dishes such as prosciutto and polenta, as well as seafood, chicken, and pork.

Friulano wines tend to be best consumed while young and fresh, although some higher quality expressions can be aged for a few years and may develop more nuanced flavours and aromas with time. The winemakers in the region have been successful in making various styles of Friulano wine, from crisp and light to more full-bodied and complex, satisfying a broad array of palates.
