Furmint

Furmint

The Furmint grape is a unique variety, predominantly cultivated in the world-renowned vineyards of Hungary and neighbouring Slovenia. It represents the heart of Hungary's notable wine region, Tokaj, where it's the primary grape variety employed in the creation of exceptional dessert wines. Despite its familiarity in Central Europe, this grape is rather obscure globally.

The distinctiveness of Furmint lies in its versatility. As a chameleon-like grape, it can produce wines spanning a broad stylistic range, from bone-dry, high-acid wines with a steely character to unctuously sweet, lusciously rich dessert wines, showcasing the grape's naturally high sugar and acidity levels.

Featuring a late-ripening character, the Furmint grape has a thick skin which makes it hearty and adaptable in the face of harsh winter conditions. It's also prone to botrytis, a noble rot contributing to creating those world-acclaimed sweet wines from Tokaj.

A typical Furmint wine, when sampled young, owns a crisp acidity, often expressing primary flavours of apple, pear, lime peel, and herbs or spices. Yet, with ageing, the wine can unlock an alluring complexity, unveiling flavours of honey, dried fruits, or even mineral undertones.

Additionally, the Furmint grape has a propensity for oak, further enhancing the flavour profile of the resulting wines. The use of oak in ageing not only amplifies the wine's textural complexity but also lends it a subtle, warm spice characteristic.

Although Furmint has been relatively neglected by the wider wine world, today it is gaining increasing recognition for its uniqueness and potential. The attractive mixture of fruit, minerality, and brisk acidity makes it a grape variety to look out for. Its impressive complexity and adaptability make Furmint poised to jostle amongst the ranks of the world's most adored white wine grape varieties.
