Pinked skin grape variety that produces white wines. In Alsace it is spelt without the umlaut.
Gewürztraminer or Gewürz (as it is sometimes known as), is famous for being overtly aromatic, the wines are typified by their sensational lychee character. Other characteristics might also be rose petals and passion fruit.
Wines made using Gewürztraminer are produced in Alsace, Alto Adige, Germany and New Zealand.
In Alsace Gewürztraminer is known as one of the five noble varietals. Due to the high glycerin (a sweet tasting polyol compound) content, and aromatic character Gewürztraminer is said to match well with smoked salmon and foie gras.
