Groppello

Groppello

The Groppello grape is a red wine grape variety that originates from the Lombardy region in Northern Italy. This grape is mainly grown on the hills around Lake Garda, where the microclimate assists in sympathetically maturing the grapes. Groppello tends to thrive in limestone-rich soils and moderate climates, revealing its superb adaptation to the cooler climate of Northern Italy.

The name 'Groppello' is derived from 'grappolo', the Italian term for 'bunch'. This name aptly describes the physical appearance of the grape clusters, which closely resemble a small bunch or knot. Varieties of the Groppello grape include Groppello Gentile, Groppello di Mocasina, Groppello di Revo and Groppello di Volzago.

Groppello is cherished for producing wines with light to medium body, high acidity and a characteristically cherry-red colour. The aroma associated with Groppello wines is quite interesting, ranging from delightful floral notes of roses and violets to the more earthy and savoury scents of herbs and spices.

The palates of Groppello wines evoke flavours of tart red fruit, such as red cherries, cranberries, and sometimes a hint of flinty minerality. Despite Groppello's somewhat stringent nature, the grape also divulges a surprising amount of complexity, offering a delightful balance of herbaceousness, spiciness and fruitiness.

Groppello wines pair well with an array of foods. Due to their high acidity, they are extremely versatile for pairing with rich dishes like roasted meats, mature cheeses, and traditional Italian pasta. Although the Groppello grape is lesser known internationally compared to other Italian grapes such as Sangiovese or Nebbiolo, it certainly holds its own with its distinctive characteristics and its potential for crafting exquisite wines. It rightfully deserves more attention from global wine enthusiasts.
