Kerner

Originating from Germany, the Kerner grape is an intriguing white wine grape variety that can produce highly aromatic wines. It was first bred in 1969 by August Herold, and named after the poet Justinus Kerner whose works often contained vineyard and wine themes. This cross of Trollinger (a red variety) and Riesling (a white variety) typically yields a more robust harvest than its Riesling parent, making it comparatively practical for cultivation.

The Kerner grape is predominantly cultivated in Germany's wine regions and also across borders into Northern Italy’s region of Alto Adige, with some minor plantings in Canada and England. It reached the apex of its popularity in Germany in the 1990s, when it accounted for over seven percent of total vineyard areas, nearly garnering a spot among the country's top three most planted grapes.

Kerner wines possess a delicate yellow-green to greenish-yellow hue. Aromatically, these wines usually present a rich, aromatic bouquet with stone fruit and green apple notes, subtly underpinned by a hint of nuttiness, reminiscent of its Riesling lineage. On the palate, Kerner's grapes yield a full body and bright acidity, balanced by a sugar content that often leans towards the medium-sweet side.

Whilst Kerner does not possess the prestigious reputation that Riesling has garnered, its wines offer a different, more playful exploration of the Germanic wine landscape. It is frequently made into varietal wines, although it can also find itself blended with Müller-Thurgau or even fermented into sparkling wines.

When paired with food, Kerner proves to be a flexible companion. Its natural sweetness and acidity allow it to pair well with spicier foods, while its mild nature also makes it an excellent pairing with light fish dishes and vegetarian options.
