Merseguera

The Merseguera grape is a white variety primarily cultivated in the eastern regions of Spain. Though not as widely recognised as Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, this obscure grape is particularly adapted to the hot, arid climate of its homeland and robust against diseases, reflecting its resilience.

The origins of Merseguera date back several decades, though historically its recognition has been marginal, often overshadowed by other varieties. However, in more recent times, it has found its niche in the region of Valencia where the largest concentration of Merseguera plantations are located. Also, pockets of its cultivation exist in Catalonia and Murcia.

Merseguera often plays a blushing bride to more famous grape varieties in blends, contributing its distinct characteristics while not taking centre stage. However, when vinified on its own, it tends to produce wines with a delicate colour, usually a pale lemon-green. The bouquet has a distinctive hint of roses and citrus fruits like lemon and grapefruit, whilst on the palate it often exhibits medium acidity with soothing, fresh fruit flavours.

This grape has had its share of ups and downs, as over the last few decades the cultivation area has shrunken due to a shift towards more globally popular grape varieties. Despite this, some wine producers have seen the potential in Merseguera and have been endeavours to resurrect its cultivation.

Merseguera wines are typically enjoyed young as they capture the fresh, fruity flavours at their peak. They are wonderful accompaniments to sea fare, salads and light starters, thanks to their refreshing, easy-drinking nature.

The story of Merseguera is a testament to the importance of preserving lesser-known grape varieties which exhibit unique characteristics and make significant contributions to the viticultural biodiversity. As some ardent wine producers in Spain have recognised, it not only upholds the legacy of traditional winemaking but also introduces wine enthusiasts to new flavour experiences.
