Mouraton

Mouraton

The Mouraton grape is a relatively rare, but distinctive red variety that originates from Portugal. This grape is primarily grown in the northern regions of Portugal and it is also found in a limited quantity in Spain due to its proximity. Mouraton is often used in the production of some of the most robust wines, known for their intense, ruby hue and a fruity palate. It is typically used as a blending grape, contributing significantly to the richness, depth and strong character of fine Portuguese wines, particularly Port wine.

Mouraton is well-suited to the relative coolness of its hilly, northwestern terroir, which sees wide diurnal temperature changes, orchestrating perfect conditions for the cultivation of this fine grape. The result is a grape that builds a high concentration of anthocyanins; these are pigments found in the grape skin which are responsible for the vivid colour in wines. Consequently, wines made from Mouraton typically exhibit a deep, almost opaque, ruby colour.

The vine is vigorous and somewhat difficult to cultivate, but it rewards the grower with bunches of small, dark-coloured berries which fully ripen towards the end of the season. The grapes produce wines characterised by a balanced level of tannin, and a bouquet that hints at dark plum, cherry, and blackberry with subtle notes of spice and an underlying earthiness.

In recent years, a renewed interest in indigenous varieties has led to a resurgence in Mouraton's popularity. Some winemakers are even experimenting with making varietal wines, which allows the true essence of the Mouraton grape to shine through. Despite its relatively lesser known status, Mouraton has proven itself a staple in the production of full-bodied, richly aromatic wines that capture the heart of Portuguese viticulture.
