White grape variety that has been grown for many centuries. There is a staggering number of different varieties found worldwide, successfully making a range of styles. The principles varieties are: Muscat Blanc à Petit Grains (which is considered as the highest in quality), Muscat Hamburg and Muscat of Alexandria. Muscat Ottonel also produces some high quality wines.They are characterised by their high concentration of monoterpenes which generate highly perfumed, 'grapey' aromas and flavours. In Italy Muscat wines are labelled Moscato and in Iberia Moscatel. Throughout these countries various styles exist including the charming Asti Spumante from Italy, Muscat d'Alsace, and sweet wines that are high in alcohol.
