Picolit

Picolit

The Picolit grape is a rare and unique variety originating from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy. This small, white grape has an illustrious history dating back to the 18th-century. It found its pinnacle in the prestigious courts of Europe, where it was much sought after for its exceptional sweet, dessert wines. Characterised by their lower yield, Picolit grapes produce small clusters, contributing to their rarity and exclusivity.

A defining feature of the Picolit grape is its susceptibility to a condition called 'floral abortion.' Basically this means that a portion of the grape flowers aborts and never evolves into fruit. This phenomenon, while reducing the quantity of harvest obtainable, paradoxically heightens the quality of the grapes that do survive, leading to a concentration of sugars and aromas, ideally suited to producing sumptuous, high-quality dessert wines.

Picolit wines are eloquently pronounced with grand aromatic complexity. They possess layers of apricot, honey, and almonds that embed into a well-rounded texture. Coupled with balanced sweetness and light acidity, Picolit creates wines that are intriguing, luxurious, and remarkably indulgent. These dessert wines often demonstrate a great longevity and evolve splendidly over time, providing a sumptuous sensory experience for the discerning oenophile.

Serving Picolit wine is best reserved for a special occasion. Its delicate nuances are enhanced when partnered with desserts, particularly those featuring nuts or dried fruit, and it can also beautifully complement blue-veined and mature cheeses.

Cultivation of Picolit grapes has experienced something of a renaissance with growers persisting in maintaining the grape's pedigree and uniqueness in the face of more commercial grape varieties. However, it remains a captivating gem in the world of viticulture, forever intoxicating those fortunate enough to enjoy it.
