Riminese

The Riminese grape, otherwise known as the Pagadebit di Romagna, hails from Emilia-Romagna, a region situated in the north-eastern part of Italy, renowned for its deeply-rooted winemaking tradition. The Riminese grape used to be marginalised due to its rather humble origins yet today it attracts wide-spread favour for its unique characteristics.

Pagadebit, the name this grape variety is best known for, translates to 'debt payer'. It gained the name because of its bountiful, reliable yields which were said to be able to reimburse even the most beleaguered grower's debts. This vine is notably sturdy, capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions and a variety of diseases that often plague grapevines, therefore ensuring a consistent and abundant harvest.

In terms of flavour profile, Riminese grapes are known for producing white wines with a charming combination of floral and citrus tendencies, underpinned by minerality and light, green apple tartness. The wine often has medium acidity and exhibits a light to medium body on the palate, often teased with almond undertones that add complexity to its structure.

While it may not carry the same prestige as some of the other more illustrious Italian grape varieties, it is gaining recognition for its ability to produce straightforward, refreshingly acidic, crisp and modern-style Italian white wines. These attributes, coupled with its fascinating backstory, make the Riminese grape an intriguing study for any wine aficionado.

Although typically consumed young, the Riminese can also be cellared for a few years, where it is known to develop more mature and complex characteristics. It pairs exceptionally well with a range of foods from light appetisers to seafood dishes and creamy pastas.

The humble Riminese grape is indeed a testament to the rich and diverse tapestry of winemaking in Italy, offering a unique and underappreciated choice for those with discerning tastes. Given the right spotlight, this grape variety could become even more popular in the years to come.
