White grape variety originally grown in the Rhône region of France. Along with Marsanne it is the only white grape permitted in the Northern Rhône wine appellations of St-Joseph, Hermitage, and Crôzes-Hermitage. This grape is difficult to cultivate due to its irregular, poor yields and low resistance to disease. Growers have overcome this by selecting better performing clones. Roussanne is permitted in the production of the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The grape is also grown in the USA, Italy and Australia. Style-wise youthful Roussanne wines exhibit floral and fruit notes, most predominantly pear.
