Tinta Roriz

Tinta Roriz

Tinta Roriz is a prominent grape variety primarily recognised for its contribution to the distinctive blends of Portugal's celebrated Port wine. The grape, known as "Tempranillo" in Spain, is indigenous to the Iberian Peninsula and bears diverse monikers in various regions. Despite its Spanish roots, "Tinta Roriz" is the Portuguese epithet for this classic varietal, specially celebrated in the Duoro Valley of Northern Portugal.

This dark-skinned grape exhibits an unmissable richness in colour and a host of distinct aromas ranging from red fruits like strawberries and cherries to darker, more complex scents like tobacco, leather, and vanilla. Notably, the Tinta Roriz grape is appreciated for its high tannin content, rendering it favourable for long-term aging.

Due to its thick skin and robust characteristics, the Tinta Roriz grape shows considerable resilience to harsh weather conditions. It's one of the first to bud in spring, yet one of the last varieties to ripen at harvest time. This elongated growing period allows the grape to develop its deep, concentrated flavours, a crucial factor contributing to the high-quality robust red wines and Ports it produces.

In its native Portugal, particularly in the Douro and Dao regions, Tinta Roriz is often blended with other indigenous grapes like Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, producing delectable, full-bodied red wines or Port with pleasant freshness and acidity, complex aromas, and an elegant finish.

In recent years, Tinta Roriz has begun to play the starring role in single-varietal wines, presenting a unique expression of their terroir, and are being widely appreciated by wine enthusiasts worldwide. The versatility, uniqueness, and the grape's contribution to some of the world's most exceptional wines position Tinta Roriz as an integral grape variety in the global wine scenario.
