Turruntés

Turruntés

The Torrontés grape is a distinctive white variety native to Argentina, often celebrated as its flagship white wine. The distinctiveness of Torrontés arises from its exquisite combination of bold floral aromas and zesty citrus flavours, making it quite unlike any other grape variety. The vines thrive in high altitude vineyards, particularly in the Salta and Mendoza regions of Argentina, where the cool climate ensures optimal acidity in the grapes.

There are three main types of Torrontés: Torrontés Riojano, Torrontés Sanjuanino and Torrontés Mendocino, with Torrontés Riojano considered the most aromatic and high quality of the three. The wine produced from these grapes is light-bodied yet full of character, boasting flavours of mandarin orange, peach, and lemon zest, intertwined with vibrant floral notes of rose, jasmine and elderflower. This distinctive profile gives it fantastic versatility with food, capable of cutting through rich flavours, such as spicy cuisine, whilst complementing lighter dishes like salads, seafood or chicken.

Torrontés is a grape that requires careful vinification. The grapes are usually harvested early to capture their high acidity, with winemakers avoiding malolactic fermentation in order to retain the distinctive fruity and floral characteristics. The resulting wine tends to be low in alcohol, bright and fresh, with a crisp finish.

Often described as an 'expressive' grape, Torrontés is certainly not one to shy away from making a statement. Whether served as an aperitif, paired with a meal, or simply enjoyed on a sunny afternoon, Torrontés wine is an excellent choice for those seeking a distinctive and versatile white wine that fully showcases the potential of Argentina's wine industry.
