Verdelho

White grape variety mostly associated with Madeira production, where the name indicates the level of richness/sweetness of the wine. Therefore Verdelho indicates that wine will be sweeter than Sercial but not as sweet as Bual.

The wine is notorious for its high acidity when aged. Some producers are attempting to make a still wine which will incorporate Verdelho as part of a blend along with the grape Arnsburger. It is also successfully cultivated in The Pico Island in the Azores, in Portugal, Spain and Argentina. It is particularly successful in the Hunter Valley region of Australia where it makes distinctive full bodied wine.

The variety Gouveio was formerly known as Verdelho and is planted throughout Portugal. However this is actually a different variety entirely.
