Vernaccia

Vernaccia is a distinctive white grape variety indigenous to Italy. It is most notably grown in the Tuscan region, particularly around the medieval city of San Gimignano. This area has a rich winemaking history, with the Vernaccia vine playing a significant role for centuries. The grape has been cultivated there since at least the 13th century, and Vernaccia di San Gimignano was recognised as Italy's first Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) in 1966, and later upgraded to Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status in 1993.

The Vernaccia grape produces wines that are typically light-bodied and crisp, with a subtle bitter finish that distinguishes it from other Italian white varietals. The fresh and fruity flavours associated with the grape include peach, green apple, citrus, and almond, while aging can bring out hints of honey and mineral nuances.

Unique to the Vernaccia grape is its remarkable versatility in wine production. It can be used to make a range of wines, from dry and still to sweet and sparkling, and can also be aged in oak barrels to develop a fuller, more complex character. Such diversity of styles makes it highly appealing to a broad spectrum of wine enthusiasts.
