Vinha Velha

Vinha Velha

The Vinha Velha grape is an exceptional variety, predominantly cultivated in the renowned vineyards of Portugal. This grape is intimately tied to the country’s rich tradition of winemaking and is particularly praised for its contribution to the elegant and robust 'Vinho Velho', which translates to 'old wine'.

The Vinha Velha grape is characterised by its small-to-medium size and dark bluish-purple skin. Over the centuries, it has adapted to Portugal’s unique climatic conditions, thus flourishing in the sunny, warm weather and cool nights, ideal for accumulating sugars and enhancing aromatic complexity.

The berries of the Vinha Velha vine have a high skin to juice ratio which brings a wealth of rich colour, tannins, and flavour compounds to the wine it produces. Owing to these properties, wines made from Vinha Velha often have intense and deep colours, a robust structure, and a remarkable ageing potential.

Despite its name, the term Vinha Velha doesn’t necessarily apply to a specific grape variety, but rather refers to the ancient, low-yield vines found in the vineyards of Portugal. These vines tend to create complex wines with an unparalleled depth of flavour and robustness.

Predominantly used to produce high-quality Ports and still wines in the Douro region, the grape gives life to wines with a complex bouquet of dried fruits, spices, and floral undertones, alongside a dense, rich, and enveloping palate.

The Vinha Velha grape embodies a sense of Portugal’s winemaking heritage and tradition. Crafted into wines that are a testament to patience and care, the grape often yields wines that are a true investment, with the potential to deepen and develop over the centuries, much like the vines themselves.
